Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, might be setting his sights on India. Here’s a breakdown of the news:

  • Tesla’s India Plans: Tesla is looking to establish a foothold in the Indian market, possibly by setting up a manufacturing plant. This would be a big deal for India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry.
  • Rajasthan’s Pitch: In the race to attract Tesla, Rajasthan has emerged as a contender. Tesla executives recently met with the Rajasthan government to discuss the possibility of setting up a plant there. The initial meeting reportedly went well, and Tesla is expected to further evaluate the state as a potential location.
  • Competition: Rajasthan isn’t the only state vying for Tesla’s attention. Other strong contenders include Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. All these states are likely offering Tesla attractive incentives to set up shop.
  • Musk’s Role: While there haven’t been confirmed reports of Elon Musk visiting India himself, his company’s interest seems to be a direct result of recent policy changes by the Indian government. These changes involve reducing import duties on EVs, making it more financially viable for companies like Tesla to manufacture in India. Musk’s visit

Rajasthan said it had marked some land parcels for Tesla in the Bhiwadi industrial town. The EV major would survey the parcels and submit its report to the state’s investment promotion department, the report said.

The state offered to “sweeten the deal” for Tesla and customise its offerings to the needs of the company, it said.

“Around Bhiwadi, the Salarpur or Khushkhera Industrial area would be most compatible for the needs of the company. The area was designed to become an auto hub and already has a presence of auto majors, ancillary industries. These zones are very well connected to the Delhi-Jaipur expressway and have seamless infrastructure support,” an official, who did not wish to be identified, told Business Standard. Musk’s visit

Usually the land is e-auctioned in these zones but the state can allot in case of a big-ticket investment. Musk’s visit
